When Real Estate Deals Go Horribly Wrong

We interrupt this cheerful, creative, non-complaining blog to bring you a special report about When Real Estate Deals Go Wrong {queue suspensful music} So, Thursday afternoon, the day before we were supposed to get possession of our new house, our lawyer called us to say there was a problem. Apparently the sellers neglected to check with their mortgage company to find out whether they could afford to sell their house. Well, when the lawyers were trying to clear the title, they discovered that--surprise!--they had a huge penalty to get out of their mortgage. Of course since they were selling the house at a loss, they couldn't afford it. And we still had to get out of our house that weekend. Saturday morning, all our friends came over to help us move. We moved OUT of our house, and IN to KD's brother's garage. At least our stuff did (including the piano, which did not injure anything, but it did lose a pedal getting out the door.) We are staying in his spare bedrooms. I've spend the last three days over at the old house cleaning, and I'm almost done now. It's slow going with JK around undoing everything, but I was able to leave her with my sister-in-law today and got a lot done. KD is over there right now steam-cleaning the carpets and moving out the last of our stuff. We'll probably have to walk away from this deal and find another house...which is horrible because none of the other houses in our price range are comparable. For now, we're homeless. At least we're not destitute and out on the street! Thank God for our wonderful family and friends! Maybe we should move to Ohio afterall and buy Rue's gorgeous house.
