Let the Spring Cleaning Commence!

Can I be honest?  I hope so, because I'm going to anyway.

I'm a really bad housekeeper.  No really, I am.  My friends will all deny it, but they don't believe me when I say I honestly don't remember the last time I really cleaned one of our bathrooms (although I guess I do suffer from mommy-brain...).  I'm pretty good at tidying fairly regularly (at least the main floor), but actual cleaning doesn't get done often.

So in my usual all-or-nothing way, to deal with the rising frustration, I decided I want to clean this house top to bottom!  I'll scrub the heck out of it!  (Good thing Juliana doesn't read yet or she'd remind me that's a bad word).  Yeah, I may be a little too ambitious.  But I do know it can be done.  I was going to say I'll have it done in a week...but that's probably not a good idea.  I don't want to set myself up to fail.

The last time our entire house was sparkling clean all at the same time was when Kevin went to Chicago for the weekend (December 2010).  It was beautiful!  For about 5 minutes of course.

The Plan

I'll clean the house one room at a time, doing absolutely everything each room needs (not including things like painting or maintenance...I'll get to that later).  Our home includes: Nick's room, Juli's room, Our room, Kids' bathroom, Our bathroom, Hall and stairs, Living room, Kitchen, Half bath, Mudroom, Basement TV room, and the Laundry/Craft/Office/Storage area.

I will post updates as I finish each room.  Dare I post before pictures?  Any guesses how long this whole thing will take me?  I'll post pictures of each room's beauty spots in all their sparkling clean glory.

Today, I begin with the Basement TV Room because that's the one that has been bothering Kevin the most.

I'd love to hear any cleaning or organising tips you may have.  Wish me luck!

  2. I'm the same way Joanna. Our house can look tidy at a glance- but dare you look further and you will find dust and nasty floors and areas that probably haven't been cleaned since we moved there middle of 2010. I got a groupon for 2 hrs of housecleaning but unfortunately that won't go very far.... Our vacuum attachment broke so I haven't done my stairs in God knows when. You inspire me to aspire to a cleaner house as well. But I'll bug Dustin to help me as well. Don't do everything by yourself- get some help here and there from hubby and kids! (ha- if they can be any helps that is...)

  3. Good luck!!! When I moved in here, I was going to wash all the walls. Top to bottom. Or bottom to top. They were FILTHY. (This place needed repainting and didn't get it, but that's beside the point.) Well, some of them have gotten washed... and I can't remember the last time I cleaned my bathroom either. :)

  4. Not alot of tips, but I can say you have inspired me to get organized for spring. It is so easy to get sidelined by everything (more factually... anything) else. Happy cleaning, Joanna!

  5. You do a fine job!! You don't need to have spotless homes all the time. I'll be the first to tell you to stop feeling guilty about it! We, women, are WAY too hard on ourselves. We all have times when we feel like cleaning more than others, and I always say, "Just go with it". You'll be much more productive when you're in the mood to do it. Have fun!

  6. Hey, I just saw this link and thought of you... http://www.untrainedhousewife.com/are-you-ready-spring-cleaning-challenge-with-giveaway. I can't really join in because we're renting (and already have brand new washing machines), but thought I'd pass it on. :)
