Old White Chair

I've been battling with these chairs for the past year.  I don't know what I want them to look like.  When I painted the blue bathroom, I mixed up some of my leftover paint to come up with a turquoise that I painted on two of the chairs.  The other ones eventually ended up white-ish. (one is brush-painted with one coat, the other is spray painted with one and a half coats).  And of course being in a household with children, they got a bit dinged up.

So today I'd had enough!  I pulled out my little Mouse and attacked one of the white chairs.  This is the result (the chair on the left is the unsanded one)

What do you think?  Is the distressing too much?  Not enough?  I asked Juliana what she thinks and she replied, "I think it looks old."  Well, that's kind of what I was going for!

I think I'll take some fine sandpaper and smooth it out a bit, then add some furniture wax.  If I thought these chairs were worth it, I'd paint them with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.  Maybe if this doesn't work.  I'm so sick of dealing with these chairs!

My inspiration for super-distressed chairs came from Heather's chairs at Post Road Vintage.

  2. I'm a fan of the painted one (not the distressed one), personally. :) I think they look good white but that depends on where you put them. All of our chairs are wood and match kitchen tables, so I've never dealt with this question.

  4. Really like the slightly distressed one - wax it and keep it. It looks distressed just enough. Personally I think that the chairs you referred to as your inspiration are a bit too distressed. I have an old chair that looked like that but I'm stripping it down and starting over - just too much chippy for me.

  5. I likely don't really need to tell you my preference, but I will 'cause I type as much as I talk :D LOVE the distressed finish. They are lovely chairs and with their casual, cottage chic lines they are perfect for the look. They'd be fabulous in any colour (and you'd think I'd try to actually sell my AS chalk paint)... but I'd keep them just as they are!

The chairs can be used anywhere in your home and make every room look good. I like them.
